The Smoky Eye effect will never go out of fashion. It is one of the most popular effects that people ask for when having their make up applied, but surprisingly so many people are constantly asking how to create the perfect smoky eye effect. Well the truth is there is no such thing. Smoky eyes are meant to create a ‘slept-in’ look which is great as it allows a not so perfect application, however for those of us who want to know the basic techniques-read on.
Items you will need:
Remember, creating smoky eyes does not necessarily mean that you have to use black eye colours. Try experimenting with different colours and shades like brown, purple, green or grey.
For this tutorial I am going to use brown as this colour suits most people.
To begin make sure that you have thoroughly removed all eye makeup and ensure that your eye brows are in perfect condition.
1. Create the base for your smoky eyes using the lightest colour; in this case it will be cream. Apply this with an eyeshadow blending brush and not a sponge brush. This will allow the product to blend with no harsh lines. Apply right up to the brow bone in a light sweeping motion to ensure that it is applied evenly.
2. Next take your medium eyeshadow (your brown) and apply to the entire lid up to the crease of your socket, again using your blending brush.
TIP- IF YOU ARE USING LOOSE POWDERS, PLACE A TISSUE CAREFULLY UNDER YOUR EYE TO CATCH ANY SPECKS ON COLOUR AND NOT RUIN YOUR FOUNDATION.
3. Take your darkest shade and gently press into the outer corners of your eyes and blend into the middle, being careful not to go any further than halfway in. Don’t forget to use this darker colour on your lower lash line as well. For a day time look only go halfway in, but for an evening look continue all the way round the eye to give a heavier, smokier look.
4. Using a clean blending brush create circular motions blending colours upwards and into each other to create a smoky finish.
5. Next, using your black eyeliner pencil, gently draw a line following your upper lash line. If you find this difficult, rest your little finger on your cheek to steady yourself. Repeat this on your lower lash line and the water line. Take your smudge brush or cotton bud and smudge the eyeliner on the upper and lower lashes to give a smoky effect.
6. Finally take your mascara and apply from root to tip, trying to catch your lower lashes as you go.
7. To complete the look apply a hint of blush in either a peach or pink and a pale lipstick or gloss in pink or nude.
For evening looks apply eye make up slightly heavier.
